PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS

Welcome to the 8th New Jersey Conference on Dominican Affairs!

Over the past six years The Conference has explores and taken action on an array of issues affecting the growth of Dominicans in New Jersey, form our numbers, need to register and vote, naturalization, school desertion and political participation, to women’s issues, business development, CAFTA, leadership development, history recording, and politics in the Dominican Republic.

This year we will take a look at ourselves and engage in a bit of self-analysis.  We touch on cultural traits, beliefs, and behaviors that play a role in how we move forward and function in this society.   Is there such a thing as “Idiosincracia de un Pueblo”?  What about our make-up as a people helps/hinders our progress?  What role does our idiosyncrasy play in the way we do business, learn, relate, and participate?  How can we maximize our strengths and meet our challenges?

In a sometimes humorous, at times thought-provoking and uncomfortable, and always serious manner, we talk about dominicanismos that hold us back/propel us to success.

This year speakers, Ex-President of Dominican Republic, Mrs. Charityn Goico, renowned businesswoman and television personality and Senator Francisco Dominguez Brito, as well as our panelists, Dr. Silvio Torres Saillant, Ana Garcia Reyes, Alfredo Rodriguez, Rep. Grace Díaz , José Ramón Bello, Maritza Del Toro, Gregorio Torres, Juan Jimenez, Councilman Rigo Rodríguez, Dr. Carlos Lugo, Rep. Joseline Peña-Melnyk, Néstor Montilla, and  Dr. Mirelle Palmansa are tre representatives of the diverse Dominican society.  They are, as individuals and collectively, dominicanismos.

The journal, book fair, art exhibit and round tables, remind us of who we are and explore what we can accomplish, because of who we are.

We greet and welcome the leaders from around the state that have come today, and with a deep sense of responsibilyt, evaluate, strategize, and birth projects to further the Dominican agenda in New Jersey.

Let’s have a productive, stimulating, and relevant conference.

Un abrazo,
